Almost Missed It: Feist
For whatever reason, I have just now discovered the beautiful amazing record The Reminder by talent Feist. Some might wonder how this may have happened considering the fact that I should be on top of the music game at all times, but let’s keep in mind that I’ve only been blogging for a little over three months now, and being the only writing contributor, discovering new music is a full time job. A full time job that pays off in great dividends when discovering gems like this record.
I may be a few months behind the rest of the pack on this one, but better late than never. I don’t know what I was expecting when I first put this on, so maybe my palette was clear for the offering of the beautiful voice leading the simple, well crafted, folk inspired songs on this record. Feist’s captivating vocals lure you into each song tugging and pulling at heart strings, while glockenspiels, horns, pianos and other accoutrements casually but effectively accent the songs. ‘So Sorry’ quietly reminds of conversations and emotions tied to relationships of past and present, while ‘The Water’ is a sexy sultry moment fit for any dimly lit lounge with a cigarette and a martini in hand. ‘Sea Lion Woman’ finds Feist playfully rocking with hand claps, a more upbeat tempo, and a rarely heard electric guitar aggressively bringing the song to it’s climax. It’s hard to find a dud on this record and being so varied throughout, the discovery of new favorites is on going, and keeps me coming back for more.

sometimes it’s nice to discover something after it’s dropped off of the web radar, because you don’t have all of that web chatter to influence your opinion going into the recording. open mind and cleansed palette.
