Tour News: Cake, Swervedriver, Trail Of Dead, & Radiohead

All packaged up in one post, tour news for a few bands of interest to me, girls around the globe (Cake), and music fans worldwide (Radiohead).

radiohead2.jpg

Both Swervedriver and Radiohead released information about touring in 2008. The Radiohead news isn’t much of a surprise and as the details are being hammered out, it appears that the road show should begin around May 2008. Thom Yorke and company are not fans of globe trotting, so this might be the last time to see them before they can be categorized as “classic rock”.

swervedriver.jpg

Swervedriver on the other hand is a nice surprise that I wasn’t anticipating. I regret missing the Adam Franklin show that just rolled through town, and from what I’ve read, we all have reason to regret not attending the show. Mezcal Head was a fav from the 90′s and I look forward to the opportunity to see the guys in 2008. No details as of yet, but keep watching.

Locals And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, who have been quiet lately, have announced tour dates, and you can find them @ Emo’s Austin this coming Saturday 10.27. Cake also have some new tour dates up, although nothing here in Austin, Tx. Dates for both bands after the jump.

Dino Jr On The Road

dino-jr2.jpg

J. Mascis, Lou Barlow, and Murph have put aside their differences and joined forces once again to bring back the sludge rock beast known as Dinosaur Jr., and we couldn’t be more pleased. The boys released Beyond this past summer and have taken to the road, hopefully to a town near you. Dec 7th finds them @ Emo’s Austin, and chances are, you’ll find Sonic Itch Music relishing in past memories compliments of the current Dinosaur Jr.

Don’t Miss This: Friday 10.19 @ Emo’s

This coming Friday night at Emo’s Austin, will showcase a great list of bands of interest to me, and hopefully a few others out there with one eye on the indie-rock kaleidoscope. Minus The Bear being the obvious attraction for most, headlining the main stage, but there are quite a few other performances worth checking out in both Emo’s Jr and the Emo’s Lounge. I make no promises as to the quality of the live performance other than Minus The Bear as I have not seen any of these bands previously, but I can say that I hear great things about the Dappled Cities live abilities. Here is my preview.

Emo’s Jr (Inside)

Show starts @ 10:

The Cave Singers

The Cave Singers lineup consists of Pete Quirk (Hint Hint), Marty Lund (Cobra High), and Derek Fudesco (Pretty Girls Make Graves and Murder City Devils), and they make modern Folk music. Not what one would think from these guys.

“Here is the mystery of Seattle’s Cave Singers: They never listened to much folk music, they never intended to play folk music, and more importantly, their guitarist never picked up the instrument until recently. Yet, this strange trio is writing and performing some of the most hypnotizing folk music we have today.”

” The band maintains that they never made a conscious effort to play a certain ‘style’ of music, and that, besides the odd Dylan record, their favorite bands are still the Replacements, the Pixies, Fleetwood Mac. With that in mind, I do believe it was Big Bill Broonzy who quipped: “All music is folk music.”–Brian J. Barr, Seattle, Washington”

Dappled Cities (Fly)

Dappled Cities or Dappled Cities Fly, the shorter version appears on the latest release, recently relocated from Australia to NY, and although they have been a band for nearly a decade, are just making their way to the conscious of the American audience. The bands latest release Granddance regularly finds it’s way spinning in my player, and I hear that they are great in the live setting. I’ve been waiting for this opportunity for awhile, and here’s hoping they don’t disappoint.

tiny-vipers.jpg

Tiny Vipers

Tiny Vipers is the work of solo acoustic singer songwriter Jesy Fortino, and the latest release Hands Across The Void is test of listening patience. The music is sparse and minimalistic, while remaining delightfully elegant and beautiful. I found it a fitting soundtrack to a recent drive through a rundown rural Texas community that felt trapped in a time far past. I find it an odd pairing for Minus the Bear, but should provide a diverse evening of curious music.

Via the Sub Pop site:

” Inhabiting the space carved out by minimal guitar, gentle textures and stark, immediate vocals, Tiny Vipers’ music evokes the contrast and quiet, empty beauty of a grey northwest landscape.”

Minus The Bear

Minus the Bear recently release Planet of Ice to mixed reviews by the press. Two publications that I generally respect the opinions of failed to understand the greatness of this record. It is an epic rock record with hammering guitar work and tripped up drum tempos that are nothing less than grand in my opinion. Prog rock, Indie rock, Experimental, whatever you want to call it, it is rock. Do yourself a favor and buy Planet of Ice, it will not disappoint, and if past experience serves me well, this evening ending performance on Friday by Minus the Bear surely won’t either.

Dead Confederate Watch & @ CMJ

dc_couch.jpg

Dead Confederate from Athens/Atlanta GA have caught my attention recently, and may be broaching the attention of others soon. A little psychedelic southern rock style lined with whiff of Kurt Cobain in his early years is the taste I get. The band is spending time this week at CMJ with an in-studio performance @ KEXP today @ 1 pm central. Check the KEXP website for archived audio of this performance. The band should have a release coming out in the near future, and you can bet that I’ll have any up to date information available soon. Hoping to see these guys making an appearance @ SXSW 2008.

Local favs The Black Angels will be playing a Halloween show in Atlanta with Dead Confederate.

Nada Surf Tour & LUCKY Mp3

nada-surf.jpg

Those guys in Nada Surf have been producing solid music since the 90′s that always seems to remain relative to whatever is happening in the modern rock scene. Sure, maybe they slipped out of our conscious one time or another, always manage to reappear to our delight. The next offering from the band titled Lucky won’t be making itself legal until Feb 5th on the Barsuk label, but opportunity to presumably experience some of the new tunage awaits you. The band is out on the road soon enough, and hopefully will be stopping in your town.

Video: Band Of Horses “Is There A Ghost”

I woke up this morning with a song in my head, as I do every morning, and today is was Band Of Horses ‘Is There A Ghost’. I’m going to admit that I haven’t been able to make it all the way through the latest release from the band Cease To Begin, and I don’t know if it is a result of some suppressed disappointment because of the Wal-Mart issue or if I just don’t like the product. Being the first song in my head for the day, I felt it necessary to post the video for the song that just hit the WWW a few days ago.

The guys will be performing on Letterman this Thursday 10.18.

News Of Interest: 1.2 million Downloads Of ‘In Rainbows’

radiohead.jpg

I know, enough with the Radiohead news!! I can’t help it, and I don’t post nearly as much as I actually come across the internet in regards to the band. Gigwise.com is suggesting that have information from someone close to the Radiohead camp, that the release day of the download In Raibows saw about 1.2 million downloads. Granted the pay as mush as you wish option probably prompted the growth in sales, but record execs would be happy with just a small portion of that for one day of cd sales.

Read the full story here:Exclusive: Radiohead Sell 1.2million Copies Of ‘In Rainbows’

And for those of you who haven’t downloaded the recording, I would suggest that you do so. It’s good. I haven’t been this excited about a Radiohead album for a long time. I did pay for mine as well, as I like to support the artists.

Video: The Shackeltons “The Breaks”

I’ve been doing my best to keep up on every move that this band,The Shackeltons, makes in anticipation of the new recording becoming available, and hopefully a tour that will bring them closer for a view. John Richards of KEXP fame, liked the band so much he signed them to his own label Loveless Records and the band soon went into the studio with Sam Jones to cut a self-titled album that should becoming legal sometime in early 2008. This video was shot during a performance at Seattle’s High Dive, and is the work of Sam Jones as well. I hear reports of the live show by these guys to be quite the experience.

Al Gore Wins Nobel Peace Prize

al-goge.jpg

(myway)

OSLO, Norway (AP) – Former Vice President Al Gore and the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize Friday for their efforts to spread awareness of man-made climate change and lay the foundations for counteracting it.

“I am deeply honored to receive the Nobel Peace Prize,” Gore said. “We face a true planetary emergency. The climate crisis is not a political issue, it is a moral and spiritual challenge to all of humanity.”

Gore’s film “An Inconvenient Truth,” a documentary on global warming, won an Academy Award this year and he had been widely expected to win the prize.

He said he would donate his share of the $1.5 million that accompanies the prize to the Alliance for Climate Protection, a bipartisan non-profit organization devoted to conveying the urgency of solving the climate crisis.

I know it’s not really music related, but you might recall the 24 hour 7 continent Live Earth concert that took place on July 7th of this year, established to help bring awareness to the the climate crisis, that was organized by Al Gore. Of course there was some criticism of Al’s effort to bring awareness, that seemed to be adding to the issue with the amount of energy that was needed to put on the event.
