Scratching your musical itch

Radiohead Again? An Explanation

Okay. My rant that I posted yesterday about the Comcast Inc report in regards to figures that they claim to have collected about how many fans paid for the download and how much they actually ponied up for the music, needs some explanation. I wasn’t really upset with the supposed findings of Comcast Inc, but instead found it a perfect opportunity to express my concerns regarding the current state of the music industry and the artists being effected by the current digital climate. I had already done the math based on the reports data and if what they are claiming to be true, which is in question, the band still would have put close to 2.5 million dollars in the bank in less than a month. Not a bad few weeks. Keep in mind that there is no middle man in this deal. Sure they have expenses to cover, but far less than if a label were to have distributed the release. My motivation for my little tirade was my frustration with the pseudo “music fans” who have taken far too much advantage of the free music environment these days and the effect that I see it having on the artists. Sure the due fate of the record labels and their execs that have been raping the artists for years is a welcomed event, but we have to tread lightly in order to maintain the essence of what we love about music. I could go on about this subject for hours, and my view could be debated for hours as well, but I’ll keep it short. Enjoy the age of digital media and use it to discover your new favorite bands, but don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. Support the bands that you love, with a little love…and some cash every now and then.

I’m stepping off of my soap box now.

In other related news:

A statement released from Radioheads UK label XL in regards to the Comcast Inc report:

“As the album could only be downloaded from the band’s website, it is impossible for outside organisations to have accurate figures on sales.”

“the figures quoted by the company comScore Inc are wholly inaccurate and in no way reflect definitive market intelligence or, indeed, the true success of the project.”

A date of 12.31.07 has been set for the UK release date of the CD and Vinyl version of In Rainbows. Nothing set for a US release as of current.
