SXSW Itch Pick: Tokyo Police Club

Tokyo Police Club are a bunch of young friends from Newmarket, Ontario, Canada, who grew up dreaming of rock and roll stardom, as most young men do, only to find themselves currently tickling the underbelly of that dream. Youthful and adventurous in their songwriting musically and lyrically, the band recently signed to Saddle Creek Records, after riding the lengthy success of the Lessons In Crime EP which was released in 2006.
Lessons in Crime clocks in at a mere 16 minutes with 7 songs, yet only takes about 30 seconds to grab your attention and hold it for the remaining 15.5 minutes. The quick tempo songs with breakneck drum beats accompanied by rich bass lines, touch on the future with mentions of robots and spaceships.
2007 found Tokyo Police Club playing to a growing audience, while experiencing a taste of the festival circuit, playing Lollapalooza, Glastonbury, and Coachella. 2008 starts off right, with a showing at SXSW 2008 and the full length on Saddle Creek, Elephant Shell, eyeing a release date of April 22nd.
We caught their show here in Austin last summer, and you can bet that Tokyo Police Club is on my list of bands to catch for SXSW 2008.
Austin dates:
Mon. March 10th @ Mohawk doors @ 9pm
Thur. March 13th @ Emos (don’t bother cuz we have a party happening at the same time)
Sat. March 15th @ Dirty Dog @ 1am
