No commentsACL Tips Straight From The Festival
I know a lot of folks like to post their tips for enjoying the festival as they feel that they might be experts in this field, but I’m just going to give you the tips straight from the folks putting on the festival. Well, I do have one tip: Keep the group of people you are hanging out with to a minimum if you want to maximize your experience. Too many people means too many opinions of what you should be seeing. You don’t want to miss out on any of your favorites because of some group democracy crap.
And here we go, straight from ACL itself:

No commentsACL Pick: Crystal Castles
It’s getting to be that time of year again, time for one of Austin’s premier music festival that continues to sell out rapidly and draw folks from all over the globe. As we do every year, we be posting a list of band’s, probably lesser known by many, that we have on our list to check out. Some old favorites and some that are sparking current curiosity.
Now I’m generally not a fan of dance/electronic/rock duos, but vocalist Alice Glass is interesting to watch live. The girl rocks this genre like no other out there. Plus, what are your other options this time of day? Red Hot Chili Peppers? Regurgitated 90′s one trick pony antics by a band that should have quit when they were on top? Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to an aural and visual treat to end the fest with Crystal Castles. It’s a guaranteed dance party.

ACL Pick: Bad Books
It’s getting to be that time of year again, time for one of Austin’s premier music festival that continues to sell out rapidly and draw folks from all over the globe. As we do every year, we be posting a list of band’s, probably lesser known by many, that we have on our list to check out. Some old favorites and some that are sparking current curiosity.
Bad Books is the musical marriage of songwriters Kevin Devine and Andy Hull (Manchester Orchestra) the two have been working together in other factions of the music business, so Bad Books seems a natural progression. The band is filled out with other members of Manchester Orchestra so fans of that band, and I know that you are a grand passionate bunch of fans, will more than likely enjoy the similar sounds of Bad Books.

Local blues guitarist Gary Clark Jr masters a genre that was the foundation of the Austin music scene for many years. As that genre has faded into the shadows of a scene that is bursting at the seams, Clark is the brightest hope for reviving it’s legacy. With a history of playing with most of the blues legends that come to mind, Clark has been establishing himself as the young saviour of the blues over the past few years, and is currently at the peak of his career threatening to become larger than life. Clark will be releasing his Blak And Blu recording on Oct 22nd, and will be hitting the late night tv circuit following.
The 2:15 time slot Sunday on the AMD Stage seems to a bit short.

ACL Pick: Gotye?

As we do every year, we be posting a list of band’s, probably lesser known by many, that we have on our list to check out. Some old favorites and some that are sparking current curiosity.
Gotye..are you fucking kidding me? ACL, get your head out of your ass. The only two reasons to show up on Saturday are Steve Earle and Neil Young and Crazy Horse. Jack White is back again and probably will be in some mystical form the next year and the next and the next and the next…yawn. Hopefully Neil Young and Crazy Horse spend some time on the classics and don’t get too caught up in pressing the new material…
Neil Young and Crazy Horse headline Saturday..sure you can figure it out.

ACL Pick: M83

M83 might not be familiar to most of you out there just on name alone, but there’s an argument that you have probably heard the band on several occasions. An electronic dream orchestration by French composer Anthony Gonzales, M83 have quietly worked their way into mainstream media with minimal nod from mainstream music consumers. The band’s 2011 release Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming has stood strong and present for the last year and their climb into the music listeners conscious may only be seeing the first few rungs of the ladder. Take a moment to breathe in the air, the sky, feel the grass, and enjoy M83

Now, I’m not claiming to be that familiar with the Black Lips music, but their onstage antics and history are enough to warrant a few minutes of your time at ACL Fest this year. Nudity, vomiting, urination, chickens, fireworks, flaming guitars just to name a few should be worth a peak. Not to mention that the band had to secretly escape India while on tour in 2009..because of previously mentioned antics. It promises to be an entertaining show at the least.

The first band on our list, and this one was an easy one as they have been a personal favorite for years, specifically for the reason they released one of may favorite albums Gentlemen. The Afghan Whigs made their skid mark on the music scene in the early 90′s after forming in the late 80′s. Transcending the grunge movement the band established itself more as a post-punk garage outfit with lyrics fitting lengthy sessions with a therapist. A recent reunion of the band promises to relive the good ‘ol days of Jagermeister shots and unforgettable gentlemanly lyrics.

ACL Festival Late Night Shows
A little late on posting this one, but ACL Festival as it does every year, brings you the opportunity to check out some of this year’s ACL Fest performers even if you don’t have plans on attending the 3 day festival. 4 nights of opportunities at various venues around town, and tickets are still available for most of the events. Much to my dismay the Afghan Whigs show is already sold out.. Still available..The Shins, Black Lips, Band Of Skulls, Delta Spirit and more..
Check listings and ticket availability HERE.
No comments2012 ACL Lineup Is Up….
Well, the time of year that many Austinites and music fans anticipate, despite the fact that many have already thrown down their hard earned cash for tickets not knowing any of the artists scheduled to perform, has arrived. The ACL Festival 2012 lineup has just been announced, and at first glance doesn’t really do much for me personally. Quite honestly, I’m not what I was expecting to see that was going to “wow” me, and maybe because I’m becoming an old goat and have seen most of these artists, it just doesn’t move me to any level of excitement. I will admit that seeing Afghan Whigs and Neil Young and Crazy Horse is of some interest, but sometimes you just want to hold onto those precious memories of special shows that you have experienced and fear smudging those memories with a lackluster festival performance.
Headliners are Red Hot Chili Peppers, Neil Young and Crazy Horse, The Black Keys with notables Afghan Whigs, M83 (although in town twice in less than a year), Iggy and The Stooges, The Avett Brothers, Crystal Castles, Andrew Bird, and a few others…
Check out the full lineup HERE.
Per usual, the festival tickets have been whittled down to one day passes only being available, so if you want to go…get on it now!
