Well, maybe not like a sieve, but I’ve always wanted to use that term. More like a drippy faucet.

So, if you haven’t been keeping score, Fun Fun Fun Fest leaked 3 artists for this year’s event last week. Keeping it real with the old school as Funx3 Fest is great at doing, rapper Slick Rick and hardcore punks Suicidal Tendencies were 2/3 of the initial leak. Introducing something new and fresh, the 3rd artists leaked last week is LA’s Best Coast, who’s surf/pop/gospel is promising to keep it easy breezy.

And that brings us to today. The day that finds us with more sweet leaks from the Funx3 Fest, featuring Dirty Projectors (yay!), Yelle (oh, they’re French), Snapcase, The Gories, and Cap’n Jazz.

Surely the leaks will keep on a comin, and if you pay attention here, you’ll get more info on the bands that we are really excited about, and maybe a few that need a closer look.

“I’m not crazy, you’re the one that’s crazy!”

This weekend, the 3rd installment of Austin Psych Fest takes place @ Mowhawk, happening April 23rd, 24th and 25th. Three days of music and art in an environment encouraging and embracing the idea of artistic expression.

While the success of Psych Fest has been a bit of a slow grow, the founder’s, consisting of members of Austin’s own Black Angels, continue on with the festival seemingly satisfied with the spirit of what they have created, and not focused entirely on financial success. While psychedelic rock may bear the weight of it’s history, rife with the imagery of tie-dye wearing hippies expanding their minds chemically, Austin Psych Fest has done a great job merging the forefathers of the genre with some of the modern purveyors that straddle the fringe. An accomplishment that hasn’t quite been fully recognized, but should see more appreciation with this upcoming installment of the event. Booking Warpaint, The Raveonettes, The Duchess and The Duke, Silver Apples, and even Austin’s own Yellow Fever are prime examples of expanding the festival to reach out to more music fans.

Three days, two stages, a crawfish boil on Sunday @ 3:33, and all for $40. In this economy, it’s a pretty good deal. You can buy single day passes as well for $15 advance or $18 at the door.

Lineup and some picks after the jump

FRIDAY APRIL 23

Outside Stage

8:00 – Ringo DeathStarr

9:00 – Warpaint

The female outfit from Los Angeles grabbed my attention early this year with the late 2009 EP release Exquisite Corpse, which fostered attention from Beggars Banquet who signed the band soon after their CMJ performance. Their live appearance at The Parish a few months back solidified the belief that the band has a solid future ahead. Sexy, beat driven psych tinged rock that never seems to repeat itself.

10:30 – The Raveonettes

Embracing the sounds of pop music from the 50’s and 60’s rooted in psychedelic rock, this Danish duo will be of interest for many a music fan who may normally shy from Psych Fest. Definitely one of the biggest draws of the weekend, and they kick it off on the first night.

Inside Stage

8:30 – Christian Bland & The Revelators

9:30 – Von Haze

11:50 – Indian Jewelry

1:00 – Daughters of the Sun

SATURDAY APRIL 24

Outside Stage

2:00 – Shapes Have Fangs

3:00 – Sisters of Your Sunshine Vapor

4:00 – The Tunnels

5:00 – Smoke & Feathers

6:00 – Headdress

7:00 – The Night Beats

8:00 – Golden Animals

9:00 – Pink Mountaintops

Big fuzzy guitar rock with female vocals thrown into the mix from British Columbia. What else needs to be said?

10:00 – Spindrift

So good during Austin Psych Fest 1, they’ve been invited back. Just listen to “The Legends Of God’s Gun” on their myspace and you’ll be intrigued.

11:00 – The Black Angels

They’re hosting the party for crying out loud. And if you call yourself a music fan, live in Austin and haven’t seen The Black Angels, it’s time to check your cred.

Inside Stage

2:30 – Ancient River

3:30 – Tia Carrera

4:30 – Telepathik Friend

5:30 – Cry Blood Apache

6:30 – Screen Vinyl Image

7:30 – City Center

8:30 – The Frequency

9:30 – Greg Ashley

10:30 – (intermission)

11:50 – The Vandelles

Hailing from Brooklyn, The Vandelles seem to share the same blood as fellow Brooklyn noise rockers A Place to Bury Strangers while channeling Duane Eddy’s soul.

1:00 – The Meek

SUNDAY APRIL 25

Outside Stage

5:00 – Mondo Drag

6:00 – Sky Parade

7:00 – The Dutchess & the Duke

8:00 – The Black Angels

9:00 – The Warlocks

“Time isn’t constant or concrete. It’s made of color and shade. Time flows, blurs and fades away in dim morning light. Time melts. And The Warlocks are the ecstatic, hazy, foreboding, holy tick tock of time that isn’t anything at all.”

I got that from their myspace page. It was too good not to use.

10:00 – Silver Apples

Don’t really know much about this band, but they are going to bring a new element to the festival with their electro psych rock. Expand is right.

11:00 – Gaslamp Killer

Inside Stage

5:30 – All in the Golden Afternoon

6:30 – Strangers Family Band

7:30 – Rayon Beach

8:30 – Ghost Songs

9:30 – Pure Ecstasy

10:30 – Yellow Fever

11:50 – Voices Voices

1:00 – PJ & the Bear

Although Psych Fest #2 didn’t fair as well as some may have desired, the founders of the festival, which include members of The Black Angels, are gearing up for the 3rd edition of the event. The show must go on, as some would say. And I say..bravo!

Details are promised to be on the horizon, but if the tradition of bringing some of the best vintage, modern, established, and up-and-coming acts that push the envelope of mind expanding music continues, I’m sure to be there once again. There is something there for just about anyone. Last year’s performances by A Place To Bury Strangers and Dead Meadow, were epic.

The festival has a new website that features some photography from our own Valerie Fremin, a store, and a jukebox featuring some live performances from previous festivals. Look for the release of Psych Fest #2 DVD in December which was produced and directed by Oswald James of AltaReal Pictures.

Spring 2010..details soon

It’s been a couple of years since Spoon fans have had new Spoon material to quell their Spoon desires, and those in attendance of the 3 day mini-fest @ Stubbs will be treated to just that, new Spoonage. The band is taking time off from shows, other than the 3 day event @ Stubbs and the Merge 20th Anniversary Festival, to focus on recording the next Spoon album. The band will preview tracks from the upcoming release during the 3 day event, so brush up on your Spoon discography, and listen carefully. You’ll hear it first.

When asked about the new material by Billboard Magazine, Spoonman Brit Daniel responded “I always hope it’s going to new territory, but it’s hard to tell. There’s a lot of guitar in them. I think they may be a bit sparser than the last album.”

Only time will tell, and we’ll be patiently awaiting the result.

Tickets for the 3-day event are on sale now @ Frontgate Tickets

This year’s Pitchfork Festival taking place in Chicago’s Union Park is one step closer to revealing it’s goods. July 17th – 19th in Chicago, at the hands of Pitchfork is looking to be one of the more intriguing music festivals of 2009. Just check the recent press release:

The 2009 Pitchfork Music Festival — to be held in Chicago’s Union Park Friday, July 17 – Sunday, July 19 — is announcing the first round of band’s to perform at this years festival, as well as a new series that will include Friday’s performances. On Friday, the festival welcomes Yo La Tengo, The Jesus Lizard (first show in Chicago in eleven years!), Tortoise and Built to Spill; Saturday will see performances by The National, Pharoahe Monch, and The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, while Sunday’s event includes Grizzly Bear, The Walkmen and Vivian Girls!

In years past, Friday night has been presented in conjunction with All Tomorrow’s Parties and their “Don’t Look Back” series, which is devoted to artists playing one seminal album from their back catalogue in its entirety. In 2008, Mission of Burma performed Vs., Sebadoh played Bubble & Scrape, and Public Enemy performed It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back. 2007 saw Slint performing Spiderland, Gza/Genius performing Liquid Swords, and Sonic Youth performing Daydream Nation.

This year, the Pitchfork Music Festival is mixing things up a bit and putting the set lists in the hands of the fans, under a new series titled “Write the Night: Set Lists By Request.” When someone buys a ticket they will receive a confirmation email that will include a link to a web page where they can vote on which of each band’s songs they’d like to hear during their set – and truly be the ones to “Write the Night.” Voting will begin on March 13 (when tickets go on sale) and will end on June 12.

To recap the 2009 line-up so far:

Friday – “Write the Night: Set Lists by Request”
Built to Spill
The Jesus Lizard
Yo La Tengo
Tortoise

Saturday
The National
Pharoahe Monch
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart

Sunday
Grizzly Bear
The Walkmen
Vivian Girls

It would almost seem that the mighty creator of modern music trends is leaning a bit heavy on some good reliable old friends. I like it.

Dead Meadow….Hell Yeah!

Sky Sunlight Saxon of The Seeds | 12:15pm

The Seeds raw style defined 60s garage rock alongside contemporaries The Kinks, The Sonics and a host of others. Front man Sky Sunlight Saxon, who has been known as the King of Garage and the sole remaining member of the original lineup, will be performing Seeds classics backed by Austin’s garage disciples Shapes Have Fangs.

skysunlightsaxon.com | myspace.com/theseeds

Bringing together stoner rockers and indie rockers, giving the former a reason to rejoice with each new album of hard-rocking psych, and the latter an excuse to indulge their dark ‘70s pleasures, Dead Meadow have humbly set the tone for modern Psychedelia.

deadmeadow.com | myspace.com/deadmeadow

They are a band to be truly experienced with an honest, primitive mind. Those willing to let go will be rewarded with a constant driving aural trip. A few weeks after a recent under-the-radar SXSW performance, Wooden Shjips won the praise of Rolling Stone magazine and were quickly grabbed by Sub Pop Records.

These minstrels sound as if they’d be equally at home entertaining a boxcar full of tramps as they would a festival of thousands. Let them regale you and your weary traveling companions with tales of the road and songs of the south.

Buoyed by front man Jess Farr’s allusive vocals, come experience the science of the Groove.
The Tunnels allow you to get lost in their crystalline chime and send you on your way down a hallway of long cavernous reverb.
myspace.com/theastronautsuit

myspace.com/smokeandfeathers

Delivering on showmanship as much as songwriting, their live show never fails to get people moving and stomping to their sexually-charged anthems. Brash, entertaining fun, PJ and the Bear take nothing too seriously except their rocking.

Psych Fest 1 was such a success that the one day event has been expanded to three days for the second installment. As the event draws closer, details began to surface. Tickets become available Feb 13th, and can be purchased @ Live Music Capitol.com

The lineup for the first day of the event has been announced and are as follows:

The Black Angels | 11:45pm

Austin’s psychedelic torch bearers and Psych Fest 2 curators The Black Angels headline Friday, closing out the night with their their drone n’ roll. There are rumors of a special guest… more info as it comes.

Check out our interview with Christian and Alex and some live footage of Black Grease.

theblackangels.com | myspace.com/theblackangels

The Golden Dawn | 11pm

George Kinney and crew take the Fest full-circle back to 1968, performing their cult status Psych masterpiece Power Plant from start to finish. Pay homage to these Texas legends as they bring history to life.

georgekinney.com | myspace.com/originalgoldendawn

Lower Heaven | 10pm

This four piece from Silverlake, California creates lush shoegaze with a variety of vintage instruments, including an auto harp. These veteran musicians pay homage to thier influences (The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Velvet Underground, Ech and The Bunnymen), and at the same time cut new paths and pave new roads to a place all their own.

lowerheaven.com | myspace.com/wwwmyspacecomlowerheaven

Woven Bones | 9:15pm

The buzz behind the few recordings they’ve released and acclaim for their live shows has us betting they’ll be hitting the road soon, spreading their dirty lo-fi grooves nationwide.

Bad news first. The Miami based Langerado Music Festival has been cancelled. Citing sluggish ticket sales and a dismal economy, the event which was to feature artists Modest Mouse, Deerhunter, Broken Social Scene, Ryan Adams and The Cardinals, plus many more, decided to call it a day. Let’s hope this isn’t the beginning of any trend this year. More info @ Langerado.com

And now to Bonnaroo 2009 news.

The Lineup for the 2009 installation of the legendary event, has been released. I’m not sure how I feel about this lineup as well, in relation to my thoughts on the recently announced Coachella lineup. We just saw Bruce performing during halftime @ the Superbowl (enough already). Phish for 2 shows? Beastie Boys, NIN, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Ben Harper, The Mars Volta, just don’t stir it up for me. Once again, my jaded old snobbishnish might be coming into play here, so I’m curious as to what folks have to say about this lineup?

Let me know.

Just a little more than 2 weeks away, Monolith 2008 has added the Handsome Furs to the lineup, much to the delight of many I would assume. For those not familiar with the band, it’s possible you might be familiar with vocalist/guitar player, Dan Boeckner’s other project, Wolf Parade. Boeckner and partner Alexi Perry make up the lineup for Handsome Furs, and as the original concept was to be a bit more sparse and stripped down, the end result is bigger and definitely full of rock, especially live. A fan of the band’s 2007 release Plague Park, I was more than impressed with their 2008 SXSW performance, and would not hesistate to make a second appointment with the band.

Handsome Furs take the New Belgium Stage 3:45 on Sunday Sept 14th.

I can’t tell you how excited I am that this day has come. Not just because of the lineup, but for the fact that out of the 5 festivals that I attended last year, Austin’s Fun Fun Fun Fest was….the most fun. The name speaks for itself. It’s not a lineup chocked full of heavies, but It’s pretty friggin cool regardless. Some standouts for me: The National, St. Vincent, Minus the Bear, Kool Keith, Islands, Frightened Rabbit, Magnetic Morning, Bad Brains, Flipper, Dan Deacon, and a few others. C’mon, Bad Brains? That’s the shit!

Two day tickets are going for $59.99. Keep checking the official Fx3 Fest page for updates.
