Pavement To Play Stubbs 9.28

The reunited Pavement have been making the rounds this year, much to the delight of many an indie-rock fan, and as a good majority of their appearances have been at some of the prestigious festivals, the band will make a stop here in Austin, at a much smaller venue called Stubbs. I have to say that I was a bit surprised that the band didn’t make the ACL Fest lineup, but am much happier with this news. Who wants to wade through a sea of lawn chairs, Phish heads, Eagles fans, and misguided weekend music warriors to enjoy the Gold Sounds of Pavement? Not this guy! Two thumbs up C3!!

Itch Pick: A Place To Bury Strangers 10.11 @ Mohawk

As if October wasn’t chocked full of a ton of great shows, especially this weekend with Murder City Devils on Saturday (Sold Out). The self-proclaimed loudest band in Brooklyn, A Place To Bury Strangers are poised to launch their attack on the senses on the Mohawk stage Sunday night. Bring earplugs, seriously.

The band’s latest release Exploding Head (think about that title) which dropped 10.6, is destined to bring much deserved attention to this trio. It’s already become one of my favorite releases of 2009.

The band is also scheduled for an in-store appearance @ Waterloo Records @ 5 p.m.. I’m going just to see the crowd’s reaction, cuz they are going to wreck it for sure. Not unless they are doing some low-key acoustic set (no fun).

All The Saints and Darker My Love get things started.

Sunny Day Real Estate Reunite/Play Austin + Tour Dates

The reunion has been leaked on Idolator, and now Austin 360.com has confirmed an Austin date for the reunited Sunny Day Real Estate and the pending tour. The tour starts on Sept 17th just 2 days after Sub Pop reissues the bands second release Diary on both vinyl and cd. Oct 7 sees the band stepping on the La Zona Rosa stage here in Austin, Tx. Sweeet!

If day one of SXSW 2009 is of any indication of what is to come, it’s gonna be friggin NUTS! Caught a few bands, drank a few beers, and chatted with some good friends.

Highlight 1: Watching the Austinists Paige Maquire on stage with the Akron Family, complete with Indian headdress. Rock on Paige!

Highlight 2: Surprisingly impressed with Dan Auerbach’s performance @ the Parish. I’ve never been much of a Black Keys fan, but Dan’s show is a must see. Joined by My Morning Jacket drummer Patrick Hallahan, Dan rocked the shit!

A few more highlights that I can’t share with you now, but maybe soon.

Jesus Lizard Set For Fun Fun Fun Fest 09

I just read on the old interweb over @ Austin360.com that Transmission Entertainment’s Graham Williams has confirmed Jesus Lizard for Fun Fun Fun Fest ’09. The fact that Jesus Lizard were reuniting for a tour this year was great news enough, but for them to play my favorite festival of the year? My day/week has just been made!

I don’t think that anyone saw this coming, but I do know that a good few of us are pretty thrilled to see it come to light. The recently reunited legendary shoe-gaze outfit My Bloody Valentine, have just announced a short series of shows around the U.S. and Austin made the cut. Tickets are on sale NOW! If you have any interest in checking out this event, I would suggest that you buy yours a.s.a.p. They won’t last long.

June Brings New Wilco Album, April DVD

Reported in Rolling Stone’s Smoking Section, Austin Skaggs writes this on the upcoming full length from one of our favorite tune crafting units, Wilco.

In a blast of creativity, most of the basic tracks were recorded in January, in New Zealand. The majority of the band — Jeff Tweedy, bassist John Stirratt, multi-instrumentalist Pat Sansone and drummer Glenn Kotche — traveled down there in December to play on tracks for an upcoming Neil Finn album that will benefit Oxfam. They got a great vibe from Finn’s studio in Auckland, so they stuck around and nailed the tracks. Producer/engineer/mixer Jim Scott is at the helm. He’s worked with everyone under the sun, and Wilco fans know him as the mixing engineer on Summerteeth, Sky Blue Sky and Being There. Master guitarist Nels Cline, and keyboard wiz Mikael Jorgensen added tasty overdubs at the Loft.

Finally, let’s just say the record is sick! When we heard Wilco debut the song “One Wing” at Lollapalooza last year, we predicted that the band was consciously moving in a more experimental direction (a la Yankee Hotel Foxtrot), but the songs we heard at the Loft take Wilco in yet another new direction. Great melodies, great lyrics, great playing and great sounds. You’re gonna dig it!

No doubt that many of us will dig it!

And don’t forget that April will bring a video Wilco fix in the name of Ashes of American Flags. The DVD is set for an April 18th release.

Front man Sky Sunlight Saxon, who has been known as the King of Garage and the sole remaining member of the original lineup, will be performing Seeds classics backed by Austin’s garage disciples Shapes Have Fangs.

Dead Meadow | 11pm

Since the beginning of this decade Dead Meadow have permeated the rock and roll scene with thick grooves and brilliant songwriting last seen since the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Black Sabbath, the Elevators, and Spacemen 3. Bringing together stoner rockers and indie rockers, giving the former a reason to rejoice with each new album of hard-rocking psych, and the latter an excuse to indulge their dark ‘70s pleasures, Dead Meadow have humbly set the tone for modern Psychedelia.

Wooden Shjips | 10pm

San Francisco’s Wooden Shjips provide a more infectious motoric groove to a deeply riff heavy and formerly monotonous genre. They are a band to be truly experienced with an honest, primitive mind. Those willing to let go will be rewarded with a constant driving aural trip. A few weeks after a recent under-the-radar SXSW performance, Wooden Shjips won the praise of Rolling Stone magazine and were quickly grabbed by Sub Pop Records.

Golden Animals | 9pm

The Golden Animals combine impeccable craft with enough diversity of influences and techniques – ‘50s rock, electric slide blues, late ‘60s psych – to satisfy fans of a multitude of genres. These minstrels sound as if they’d be equally at home entertaining a boxcar full of tramps as they would a festival of thousands. Let them regale you and your weary traveling companions with tales of the road and songs of the south.

Minneapolis imports Daughters of the Sun bring to mind grainy polaroid images of summer afternoon jam sessions: blissful percussion-driven psychedelic rock with a nod to 60s psych folk.

Brash, entertaining fun, PJ and the Bear take nothing too seriously except their rocking.

Devo @ SXSW! Sweeeet!

The quircky electronic punk outfit from the 80′s, Devo, is set to headline a BMI showcase @ this year’s SXSW Festival. The showcase will be taking place @ The Austin Music Hall on Friday March 20th, and this guy will be doing everything he can to catch this performance by the legendary band.

Best known for the hit single “Whip It” the band produced a dozens of recordings spanning the 80′s, 90′s, and beyond. Other notable singles “Jocko Homo”, “Working In A Coal Mine”, “Through Being Cool”, “Beautiful World” and others solidified the band as pioneers and legends of the New Wave/Art Rock/Electronic Punk scene of the 80′s.

Being a music fan living here in Austin, TX since the early 90′s, I can tell you that this is one “rare” opportunity to see this band. Don’t miss out.
