One music magazine that doesn’t look to be in a state of near collapse (seen the latest issue of Paste? like my last date, thin and dull), death + taxes have introduced a new concept for the music magazine. The newest issue, featuring Jay Reatard on the cover, features this new technology, and one wonders if this is the wave of the future, or just a spitting breeze. Don’t get me wrong, I love this magazine, it’s one of current favs. I especially appreciate the fact that the fashion industry isn’t slut-ted out all over the musicians throughout the pages. I like to see Jay Reatard wearing what Jay Reatard likes to wear, not Jay Reatard wearing shirt by Rag & Bone, underwear by Hanes. I’m sure that’s a cool bonus for the musicians. That jacket sure does look familiar Brian…ahhh.

So here how this new technology works:

1. There are three red icons to look for on the pages of the magazine. A camera, a video camera, and a set of headphones.

2. Notice the icon on the page, grab your phone.

3. Snap a pic of the entire page.

4. Send the pic to Mobot at 66268 or dt@mobot.com

5. Get some stuff!

So, I did this with a page from the Jay Reatard article and I received a photo of Jay in my email box (text photo wouldn’t send?) with these instructions: Tap/Click image to see Jay Reatard

go ahead, do it. See what happens

THIS IS A MUST WATCH: At the 140 Characters Conference, Rolling Stone and Idolator critic Christopher R. Weingarten shared a witty and all too true overview of how music blogs, album leaks and Twitter are changing the role of the music critic. “Crowdsourcing killed indie rock…because people have awful taste…”. Watch it, chuckle and weep, then check out his fabulous Twitter min-album review project 100TimesYes.

-I’ll start with something of just pure pleasure. I came across this post over @ MuzzleofBees.com containing a video clip of Bon Iver doing an acoustic cover of The Jayhawks “Tampa To Tulsa”. The video itself isn’t all that great, but the audio is decent, and it was refreshing to see one of my current favs covering one of my favorite Jayhawks songs. Inspired me to dig into the music collection and revisit the band for the morning. Video: Bon Iver :: “Tampa To Tulsa” (Jayhawks cover)

-Question: How many of you know who Chrisette Michelle is? I sure as hell don’t have any idea, but you would think after reading this, you should. Haven’t subscribed to the Lefsetz Letter yet? What are you waiting for? Start with this read: Sales-Week Ending 5/10/09

-When I opened up my latest copy of Paste Magazine, I found the editors letter or editorial by Josh Jackson to be titled “What, Me Worry?”. Essentially, Jackson discusses the lean times in the print industry and the efforts being made by Paste to stay in the game. He sounds confident and reassuring. And then this surfaces on the Pop Candy blog: Can ‘Paste’ Magazine Be Saved? Not only that, if you go to the Paste website you’ll find this:

So sad….

-This is geared to the music business geeks who are interested in the current state of the industry in regards to the tracking and dealing with/of album leaks by labels, management, and tracking companies. Once again the newest Wilco album leaks weeks before it’s official street date, and this is an interesting examination on Billboard.com of how the industry has responded: Wilco Album Leak Generates ‘Net Buzz
